Cultural Leadership & Innovation
Utopias, Strategies and Challenges of Arts Management
The term “cultural leadership” has gained increasing attention in the discourses of cultural management and cultural policy, as well as in the curricula of international study programmes and higher education programmes. In many of these contexts, “cultural leadership” is presented as a force for innovation and transformation of organizations and societies.
The 11th Annual Conference of the Association for Arts Management (Fachverband Kulturmanagement for Germany, Austria & Switzerland) takes this observation as a starting point for an interdisciplinary, international gathering of researchers and practitioners in the field of arts management.
Confirmed Keynotes: Amelie Deuflhard, Director Kampnagel (Hamburg), Simon Kavanagh, kaospilots.dk, Andreas Reckwitz, Professor for Comparative Sociology of Culture, Europa-Universität Viadrina (Frankfurt / Oder), Steven Walter, PODIUM Festival, Jan Zoet, Director Departments for Theatre and Dance, University of Arts (Amsterdam), Julie Joly, CEO Ecole W (Paris)
The program for the conference can be downloaded here as a PDF.

Study Visits in Hamburg on Saturday, January 20, 2018
Registration during the conference (Limited spots available)
After the conference, on Saturday 20 January 2018, study trips will be offered to select cultural organizations in Hamburg, which will give an insight into the diverse cultural landscape of Hamburg and open up further possibilities for networking among the conference participants. The study visits take us to following cultural institutions:
In January 2017, after a long construction period, one of the most impressive concert halls in the world was opened in Hamburg - the Elbphilharmonie. Within a short time, the Elbphilharmonie has become the city of Hamburg's landmark. All announced concerts are sold out within a few hours. The conference takes us to the building and offers the possibility to a conversation with the director Christoph Lieben-Seutter.
The German Harbor Museum is a new chapter in the history of Hamburgs major cultural projects. The opening of the museum, which aims to attract 300,000 visitors a year, is scheduled for 2024. The location is not set yet.
Participants in the study visit have the opportunity to visit the Hamburger Hafenmuseum, which is normally closed until April. There will be a guided tour offered by "Harbor Seniors" and the possibility to talk to a member of the project group about the new German Harbor Museum.
